Michael Cooney began their career in 1991 as an Electrical Engineer Trainee at LTA Process Engineering. During this time, they gained experience in metal machining, CAD drawing, high voltage cable installation, high voltage equipment testing and manufacture, engineering practical training courses and programs, and electrical engineering applications. In 1994, they were promoted to Electrical Project Engineer at LTA Process Engineering. In 1997, they moved to Cegelec as an Electrical Engineer. In 1998, they founded EngNet, where they served as the Managing Director, Managing Member, and Founder and President of EngNet. Theirrole at EngNet was to partner with industrial manufacturers and suppliers to develop unique marketing programs and strategies to reach targeted industrial audiences. Finally, in 2014, they co-founded WhatConverts, a software solution that allows users to track phone calls, web forms, web chat and e-commerce transactions back to their marketing campaigns and keywords.

Michael Cooney attended the University of the Witwatersrand from 1991 to 1994, where they earned a degree in Electrical Engineering with a field of study in Heavy Current Electrical.
