John Rakes is an experienced music educator and conductor with a diverse background in teaching and choral direction. Currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at Kishwaukee College and Wheaton College since 2016 and 2014, respectively, John Rakes instructs various music appreciation and introduction courses. As the Artistic Director of the Downers Grove Choral Society, John Rakes leads an adult community choir, while previously directing the Kantorei, The Singing Boys of Rockford. John Rakes also has experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Choral Fellow at The University of Iowa, a General Music Teacher at Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C, and a Choir Director at Faith Christian Reformed Church. Academic qualifications include a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting and Pedagogy from The University of Iowa and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education from Northern Illinois University and Wheaton College, respectively.
