Founded in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, WHEELS Museum is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of transportation and the American West. Home to over 10,000 rare full-sized vehicles, models, and artifacts, we have welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world and proudly earned over 30 awards for our exhibits and programs.

Throughout the years, we’ve hosted hundreds of educational events, presentations, and community celebrations, working collaboratively with city, state, and federal agencies, as well as institutions like UNM, APS, CNM, and numerous partners who share our passion for history, culture, and economic development.

WHEELS is located in a 27,000 sq. ft. historic landmark on a 27-acre site—the former Santa Fe Railway locomotive repair yard, where 1,500–2,000 men once worked around the clock to repair up to 40 steam engines a month. This site, a vital part of Albuquerque’s and the West’s industrial heritage, was preserved because of the Museum’s efforts.

As we continue to grow and expand, we are always seeking collaboration with like-minded organizations and individuals who are passionate about preserving history, fostering education, and contributing to Albuquerque’s future.
