Lauren Smiley

Lauren Smiley is a seasoned journalist with extensive experience in investigative and narrative reporting, currently serving as a contributor for WIRED since December 2019, where notable work focuses on tech and criminal justice. As an independent journalist since January 2012, Lauren has contributed to prominent publications including The Atlantic, New York Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine. A two-time winner of the SABEW's Feature Writing Award, Lauren also co-chaired the Freedom of Information Committee for the Society of Professional Journalists - NorCal Chapter from April 2020 to October 2022. Other significant contributions include the investigative podcast "Broken Harts," and roles with San Francisco Magazine, Matter and Backchannel, NewYorker.com, and San Francisco Weekly. Lauren holds an Honors BA in Journalism and a BA in Spanish from the University of Iowa, awarded in 2005.
