Over approximately ten years, a well-monitored and managed test herd of 5 to 25 animals, initially enclosed and later free-ranging, will be studied to determine whether wisents can live as wild animals in the Jura region and whether their presence is sustainable. Accompanying scientific research examines their diet, herd behaviour towards humans, livestock, and infrastructure of all kinds. Any potential wildlife damage or additional expenses are systematically documented and compensated for those affected.

The walk-in enclosure fosters positive interest in wild-living wisents, allowing people to experience the animals in the Jura landscape. It alleviates any fears about the animals and also serves as a resource for practical studies.

At the heart of communication is the Wisent Ranger, who provides information, advice, and assistance to individuals who come into contact or conflict with the wisents. The ranger is always accessible and can quickly respond on-site.
