WAV started as a New York State pilot program in 2022 when the Governor's Challenge to Prevent Suicide collaborated with Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) training to help address Veteran gun suicide. 

Initially piloted in New York State with support from the NYS Health Foundation, WAV expanded nationwide in 2024 with support from the Bronx Veterans Medical Research Foundation and additional funding from Face the Fight™.
