The Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT) was founded in 2002 by the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University in New York. The aim of WTERT-Canada the sister organization of the Global WTERT Council, is the identification of the best available technologies for the recovery of energy or fuels from municipal solid waste and other industrial, agricultural and forestry residues and strives for the development of Waste-to-Energy in all Canadian provinces. While Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands are the leading countries relating to a sustainable waste management, with a low landfilling rate of 4 % due to a high thermal recovery and recycling rate, Canada is still affected by a high landfill disposal rate. The management of waste must be based on science and best available technology and not what seems to be inexpensive now but can be very costly in the near future. That’s why we wants to bring together engineers, scientists and managers from universities and industries locally and worldwide to make it possible.

WTERT a été fondé en 2002 par le Earth Engineering Center de l’Université de Columbia à New York. L'objectif de WTERT-Canada, affilié au réseau mondial du WTERT, est d'identifier les technologies de pointe pour la récupération d'énergie ou de combustibles à partir de déchets solides municipaux et d'autres résidus industriels, agricoles et forestiers afin de développer les unités Waste-to-Energy dans toutes les provinces canadiennes. Alors que l'Allemagne, la Suède et les Pays-Bas sont les principaux pays en matière de gestion durable des déchets, avec un faible taux de mise en décharge de 4% en raison d'un taux de récupération thermique et de recyclage élevé, le Canada est toujours affecté par un taux élevé d'élimination par l’enfouissement. La gestion des déchets doit être fondée sur la science et les meilleures technologies disponibles et non sur ce qui semble être bon marché actuellement mais peut être très coûteuse dans le future.
