John Schulz has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. John began their career in 1971 with various part-time jobs, including grading tests, tutoring, and developing software for different departments. From 1975 to 1983, they worked as a Data Processing Consultant at Sperry Computer Systems, providing sales support and consulting services to various clients. John then moved on to Tandem Computers Inc, where they worked as an Advisory Systems Analyst from 1983 to 1993, supporting sales efforts and serving as a consultant for customers from various industries.
In 1993, John became a Consultant, specializing in NonStop Applications. During this time, they designed and implemented various software solutions for clients, including communication drivers and security reviews. In 1997, they joined AOL as a NonStop Applications Consultant, contributing to the design and rollout of a new mail system and implementing operational tools and procedures.
John's next role at AOL was as a Principle DBA, where they designed and built an operational data warehouse and developed services for alarm management and application maintenance. John then transitioned into a Senior Operations Architect role, participating in the design and implementation of application messaging platforms and AWS-like services. Lastly, they served as the Chief Architect at AOL, benchmarking database systems and performing evaluations on server systems.
In 2014, John worked at P&J Consulting Services as an IT Architect, engaging in short-term projects related to databases and data analytics. At the same time, they joined Pythian as a Principal Consultant, providing open-source database consulting services and recently completing a large-scale NoSQL database project.
Currently, John is working as a Principal Sales Engineer at Yugabyte, utilizing their extensive experience in database systems to support sales efforts.
John Schulz attended Oak Park River Forest High School from 1966 to 1970. John then pursued a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA) with a focus on Computer Science at Illinois Institute of Technology from 1970 to 1975. Additionally, they have obtained certifications as a Certified Administrator and Certified Architect on Apache Cassandra from O'Reilly Media.
