Don Rainey

Don Rainey joined Grotech Capital Group as a General Partner in September 2007. Located in the greater D.C. area, he identifies and evaluates information technology and life science investment opportunities, working in the entrepreneurial community from Baltimore to Richmond.

Don is a serial entrepreneur who has been part of and built many successful businesses in the networking and online marketplaces. Prior to joining Grotech, Don was a General Partner with Intersouth Partners, an early stage venture capital firm in North Carolina. He was previously president of Attitude Network, one of the first entertainment networks online, which was sold to TheGlobe.com. He also served as a founding member of the Board of Directors for Accipiter through its acquisition by CMGI and was COO of DaVinci Systems, a Research Triangle-based software company, which was sold to ON Technology, enabling a combined entity IPO four months later.

Don has also held senior executive positions with Novell and the IBM Corporation. At Novell, he was responsible for all reseller programs and channel distribution. At IBM, he managed channel distribution and brand marketing for the $2 billion Network Hardware Division, where he established and managed product marketing and distribution in 50 countries.

Don is an adjunct professor at George Mason University where he teaches a course on venture capital in the School of Management. He serves on the Enterprise Investment Advisory Committee for the State of Maryland and the Investment Advisory Board of the State of Virginia's Growth Acceleration Program. He sits on the Boards of Directors for Mindshare and Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties and has held leadership positions with the Northern Virginia Technology Council and the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association. Don received his B.B.A. from James Madison University.
