The Zoran Djindjic Foundation was established on December 15, 2003, following the tragic assassination of Zoran Djindjic, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia. The Foundation was created to preserve his legacy and promote the values he stood for—those of a modern, democratic Serbia.

The Foundation’s charter outlines its core mission: to foster scientific and research initiatives that contribute to the development of democratic society and political culture; to organize humanitarian and civic activities that support these values; and to encourage international exchange and cooperation.

Since 2004, the Foundation has partnered with the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations (Ost-Ausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft) to implement the Zoran Djindjic Internship Program of German Business. This flagship initiative enables talented young professionals from Serbia and the Western Balkans to gain valuable work experience in leading German companies.

From 2007 to 2011, the Foundation also collaborated with the Austrian Development Cooperation to run a similar program: Experiencing Europe – Serbian Young Professionals in Austria, which offered internships and insights into Austrian business and society.

Another cornerstone of the Foundation’s work is the Regional School of Political Philosophy Zoran Djindjic, supported by the Balkan Trust for Democracy and organized in cooperation with the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade. This program brings together students and young leaders from across the region to explore key concepts in democratic governance and political thought.

In addition to its internship and educational programs, the Foundation is also developing a growing publishing activity in collaboration with the National Library of Serbia, further contributing to public discourse and civic education.
