Adam Selipsky Will Replace Andy Jassy and Lead Amazon Web Services (AWS)

There has been much speculation around who will be replacing Andy Jassy since Jeff Bezos announced his new successor last month. Many candidates were considered, but few could have predicted that Adam Selipsky would be chosen for the role.

On Tuesday, Jassy announced in a company-wide email that Selipsky, the CEO of Tableau, who helped launch AWS in 2005, will be returning to the company to lead Amazon’s cloud services division on May 17.

When Selipsky left Amazon in 2016, his position was empty for almost four years before the company promoted Matt Garman to take over the role. Selipsky was originally hired as VP to work on AWS and was at the company for 11 years before leaving to join Tableau as CEO. Under his leadership, AWS grew to become a $13 billion revenue business. It is reported that Selipsky and Jassy have a close working relationship.

“Having been in such a senior role at AWS for 11 years, he knows our culture and business well,” Jassy wrote. “We have a lot more to invent for customers, and we have a very strong leadership team and group of builders to go make it happen.”

As CEO of Tableau, Selipsky oversaw the company’s $15.7 billion acquisition by Salesforce in 2019. He will be succeeded by Mark Nelson, who joined Tableau in May 2018 as EVP of product development.
