Shou Zi Chew, ByteDance’s recently hired CFO, is adding a new title to his job description: CEO of TikTok. Vanessa Pappas, Tiktok’s interim CEO, will now become the app’s COO.

Chew first joined ByteDance in March as its first-ever CFO, a move that signaled it was gearing up for a highly-anticipated IPO. Chew previously worked as the CFO at Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi and guided the company through its public debut in 2018. Before that, Chew worked at DST Global, an early investor of Bytedance.

New ByteDance

TikTok’s last CEO, Kevin Mayer, stepped down in August after only three months in the job, citing the pressure from the Trump Administration to sell to a U.S. company as his reason for leaving. Pappas has been steering the company since.

"The leadership team of Shou and Vanessa sets the stage for sustained growth," ByteDance CEO Yiming Zhang said in a statement. "Shou brings deep knowledge of the company and industry, having led a team that was among our earliest investors, and having worked in the technology sector for a decade. He will add depth to the team, focusing on areas including corporate governance and long-term business initiatives.”

Chew will remain in his CFO position at ByteDance, which isn’t the first time the company has done this. Mayer was also serving as ByteDance’s COO during his tenure.
