Mona Sutphen, who served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy under President Obama from 2009 to 2011, will be joining Spotify’s Board of Directors in April.

“I’m very much looking forward to joining the Spotify Board of Directors,” Sutphen said in a statement. “Spotify has been a revolutionary force and impressive innovator in the audio industry, transforming the content landscape globally. I’m excited to be a part of its continued evolution and expansion.”

Sutphen has more than 20 years of experience working with multinational corporations, advising companies on geopolitics, policies and markets. She currently serves as a senior private equity advisor for The Vistria Group and is the co-founder of multiple technology startups. Sutphen previously worked at Macro Advisory Partners as a partner and was the managing director of UBS AG. From 2013 to 2016, Sutphen served on the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board.

“Mona has built a career in both the private and public sectors advising leaders on international and U.S. domestic policy, technology, macroeconomics and trade, and human rights...and that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” Daniel Ek, Spotify Founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board said in a press release. “Mona will bring a new and highly valuable perspective to the Board as we focus on driving our strategy forward during this time of exceptional change around the world.”

Spotify’s Q4 results for 2020 showed an incredible year of growth. It exceeded forecasts by growing premium subscribers to 155 million (up 24%) in the fourth quarter of 2020 — adding a record 30 million for the year. The audio streamer’s total users grew 27%, to 345 million in Q4, after netting 74 million in 2020.
