GameStop announced that it has hired Matt Francis to fill its newly-created Chief Technology Officer role.

Francis, who will step into his new role on February 15, 2021, will be responsible for overseeing the retailer's e-commerce and technology functions.

To support the company’s e-commerce push GameStop made two other key hires, both of which join in March 2021. The video game retailer added Kelli Durkin as SVP of Customer Care to oversee all customer service and engagement initiatives and Josh Krueger as VP of Fulfillment to oversee the management of e-commerce fulfillment centers, according to a press release.

Francis is an e-commerce and consumer technology veteran who will bring over 20 years of experience to GameStop’s top technology role. Most recently, Francis served as an Engineering Leader at Amazon's cloud computing subsidiary AWS. He has also held senior-level technology roles at QVC and Zulily.

GameStop’s new hires will help further the company's transition to become an e-commerce powerhouse as it adapts its core business to appeal to consumers who are increasingly buying digital copies of video games that can be downloaded directly to their gaming consoles.

The hirings also come on the back of a recent attempt by retail investors to short squeeze hedge funds who bet against the video game store’s stock, causing GameStop shares to spike to eye-watering prices.
