Caesar Sengupta, Google’s VP and General Manager in charge of Payments and its Next Billion Users initiative, will step down at the end of April.
In the LinkedIn post announcing his decision to leave the tech giant after almost 15 years on the job, Sengupta said, “have decided to venture out and start on a new mission. I remain very positive about Google’s future but it's time for me to see if I can ride without training wheels.”
While he hasn’t pinned down exactly what his next move will be, he revealed that he will take some time to chill, talk to interesting people, reconnect with the external world and ride his bike.
In his time at Google, Sengupta was a key executive in the creation and management of foundational products and initiatives like ChromeOS, Google Pay, and Next Billion Users.
Sengupta’s departure is a major blow to Google’s Next Billion Users initiative, which conducts research and builds products to bring the internet to previously unconnected or underserved populations. His decision to leave builds on Google's parent company Alphabet’s decision to shutter Loon, the company's subsidiary that aimed to use balloons to bring connectivity to hard-to-reach locales and underserved areas.
