Magic Leap no longer has its CTO, COO, and Chief Patent Officer, according to a report by Insider.
Sources familiar with the matter told the news outlet that CTO Paul Greco and Chief Patent Officer David Lundmark will depart the augmented reality (AR) giant later this month, while COO Henk Vliestra will exit later in 2021.
However, the news doesn’t stop there, as Magic Leap has also reportedly rehired Daniel Diez to reprise his role as Chief Marketing Officer.
According to Insider, CEO Peggy Johnson and Greco did not see eye to eye over a decision to remove software from the CTO's group, however, it is unknown if the disagreement played any part in the decision to part ways.
This flurry of moves comes almost a year after the battered tech company hired Johnson to turn it around when talks to sell the company fell through. Johnson is in the midst of reshaping the AR tech venture’s executive team, as in March the company hired a Chief Software and Cloud Officer, and a Chief Product Officer.
Magic Leap plans to release its Magic Leap 2 headset in early access in the fourth quarter of 2021 before making it generally available in the first quarter of 2022. The company’s last AR headset vastly underperformed its expected sales numbers and only sold 6,000 units in its first six months despite expectations that it would move 100,000 in its first year.
