NBCUniversal has appointed John Lee as the media giant’s Chief Data Officer within its Global Advertising & Partnerships division.

In the newly-created position, Lee will report to the group's President and Chief Business Officer, Krishan Bhatia, and lead an enterprise-wide data unit. His priority will be to develop the company’s first-party data strategy to support advertising, marketing, consumer experience and analytics use cases across the company.

“John will help us set a new standard for consumer identity and data management as well as deliver on our promise of creating a unified platform that drives our business and our partners’ businesses forward, while giving our audiences the best experiences on the screen, in our parks and at the movies,” Bhatia commented.

Lee is a data veteran and joins NBCUniversal from Merkle, where he served as Global Chief Corporate Strategy Officer. He had been with the Dentsu-owned company since 2008 and served in a variety of top roles i, including Chief Product and Data Officer as well as the Global President of Merkury.

Lee believes the next era of media and advertising will be defined by data and identity. He went on to say, “From theme parks to movie studios, digital and streaming to linear, NBCUniversal is poised to deliver a unified consumer identity vision that meets the needs and expectations of both consumers and marketers while maintaining the trusted relationships the company has built, creating new ways to generate revenue and scale investments with privacy in mind.”

NBCUniversal’s focus on data comes amid a digital pivot that includes its recently launched Peacock streaming service, park app for visitors, and One Platform offering, which enables the company to sell its ad inventory across all devices.
