An estimated 30.4 million people in the U.S. used dating apps in 2021 and by far the most popular app among them is Tinder, a subsidiary of Match Group.
Other than Tinder, some other subsidiary companies owned by Match Group include Hinge, OkCupid and Plenty of Fish, just to name a few. In other words, if you’re dating using apps, there’s a pretty good chance Match Group is powering your dating search.
The company is led by Shar Dubey, who succeeded Mandy Ginsberg in the top position two years ago. She has been named one of the most powerful women in the world by Fortune magazine. Dubey is one of the first public company CEOs to take a stand against the restrictive abortion law in Texas, where Match Group’s headquarters is located. She has created a fund for all employees who are impacted by the abortion laws and has over a 70% approval rate among employees, according to Glassdoor reviews.
Like many other online dating companies, Match Group’s subsidiaries have been involved in scandals around the mishandling of sexual assault incidents. Tracey Breeden, VP and Head of Safety and Social Advocacy began her job at Match soon after news broke of how dating apps were not actively investigating and handling reports of sexual assault from its users. When a vicitim tried to report a case of sexual assault, they were given automated responses that said, “thanks for submitting,” and never head back. Further, apps such as Tinder often protected sexual predators as once they “unmatched” someone from the app, the chat history would dissapear for both parties, erasing evidence that could be used against them. Breeden, who was previously the Head of Global Women's Safety & Gender-Based Violence Programs at Uber, will now be responsible for all trust and safety investigations and strategies across Match and its subsidiaries.
As Match is currently the largest dating company in the world, it hopes to continue to maintain its stronghold over the space by acquiring up-and-coming dating platforms. Most recently, it tried to buy the Mulsim dating app, Muzmatch, but its offer was turned down four times. This eventually led to Match Group taking Shahzad Younas, Muzmatch’s founder, to court for allegedly copying its intellectual property and using “match” in its name. In charge of these legal battles is Jared Sine Match Group’s Chief Business Affairs & Legal Officer. Previously the VP and Associate General Counsel (M&A and Integration) at Expedia, Sine has many years of experience working in acquisition deals. He has also taught M&A at BYU Law School.
Match Group will report its fourth-quarter results tomorrow, and it is predicted that the company’s revenue will be between $810 million and $820 million. Managing all operations and finance at the company is Gary Swidler, the company’s COO and CFO. After graduating with a JD from NYU, Swider worked for Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz for two years before moving to The Bank of America, Merryl Lynch, where he would spend the next almost two decades of his career. He joined Match Group as CFO in 2015 and took on the extra COO title in 2020.
Assisting Swidler in managing finances is Chief Accounting Officer Philip Eigenmann. Swidler is an experienced accountant who began his career at the big four accounting firm Ernest and Young. He later held a senior finance leadership position at AMX Corporation.
With a predicted 25.7% growth from the previous year, Match group’s adoption of video and audio-enabled services on its dating platforms amid the pandemic has definitely reaped results. Overseeing the strategy and ensuring its products remain relevant is Chief Strategy Officer, Faye Iosotaluno. Iosotaluno served as Tinder’s SVP, New Business Initiatives before taking on the same title at Match Group. She has many years of experience in business strategy and development, including executive roles at SoundCloud, Viacom and Warner Brothers. Iosotaluno has an MBA from Harvard and a BS and BA from The University of Pennsylvania.
