Daniel Danker, the Senior Director of Product for Uber Eats, confirmed the rumors of his departure from Uber in a tweet today. Whispers about Danker’s role change were first reported by The Information on March 5.

Danker has accepted a new role as the VP of Shopper & Fulfillment at Instacart and will now report to COO Asha Sharma.

His new position places him in charge of Instacart’s more than 500,000 Shoppers — the independent, on-demand contractors who fulfill and deliver Instacart users’ orders from stores like Costco, Aldi, Sephora, Petco, and Best Buy.

Danker’s defection from Uber, which has also been pushing its way into the grocery and retail delivery space, is a huge blow to its efforts to diversify its revenue streams in search of profitability.

In the wake of his departure, Uber will reportedly merge its product divisions under its recently minted Chief Product Officer Sundeep Jain. An Uber spokesperson told Retail Dive, "To offer a more deeply integrated consumer experience across our mobility and delivery platform, we are taking the opportunity to reorganize our product teams to reflect that."

On the Instacart side, Danker’s hire comes as the profitable company is positioning itself for rapid growth. The company hired over 300,000 Shoppers in early 2020 and in 2021 it is eyeing an IPO or direct listing.
