Ruth Wahtera has a diverse work experience that spans over several decades. Ruth started their own company, Ruth Wahtera, Inc., in 2002 and currently serves as the President & Owner. Prior to this, they were a part of the AAUW organization, where they held the position of Leadership Corps and Director of Communications, focusing on achieving equity for women, girls, and minorities using their writing and facilitation skills. Ruth also worked at the New York Center for Interpersonal Development as a Board Member and consultant, providing support for grant applications and editing the enewsletter. In addition, Ruth had a successful career in the healthcare industry, serving as a Vice President at Staten Island University Hospital from 1978 to 1988, and holding various senior management positions in the Sisters of Charity Medical System, where they oversaw ambulatory, private practice, and emergency services, as well as quality assessment and improvement. Ruth also contributed to community development as a board member and president of Bay Street Landing, a residential coop building, and a three-building home owners association.

Ruth Wahtera attended Brandeis University from 1965 to 1970, where they obtained their Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Anthropology. Later, from 1978 to 1982, they pursued further education at The New School, completing a Master's degree in Healthcare Administration (MPS).
