Bill McDowell has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Bill started their career as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Justus Liebig Universität Gießen, where they focused on researching inhibitors of protein glycosylation. Bill worked on understanding the modes of action of fluorosugars and glycosidase inhibitors.

After that, Bill joined the MRC Collaborative Centre as a Research Scientist, where they worked until 1993.

In 1993, Bill joined GlaxoSmithKline as an Investigator and supported research programs against various targets, including anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, tuberculosis, malaria, and respiratory diseases. Bill also led a program focused on anti-malarial targets, overseeing the work from protein expression to lead optimization phases.

In 2014, Bill joined Abzena as the Group Leader and Head of Analytics, where they provided analytical support to multiple groups within the company, including protein engineering, cell line development, and bioconjugation. Bill'sresponsibilities included conjugation of cytotoxic payloads to antibodies, purification and characterization of ADCs (Antibody-Drug Conjugates), and utilizing analytical techniques such as hydrophobic interaction chromatography and LC-ESI-MS.

Currently, Bill holds the position of Senior Director, Analytics at Abzena, starting in April 2022, where they continue to contribute their expertise in analytics and support the company's objectives.

Bill McDowell attended King Edward VIth Grammar School in Morpeth, Northumberland from 1966 to 1973. Bill then went on to study Biochemistry at Heriot-Watt University from 1973 to 1980, earning a B.Sc and Ph.D.
