Thomas LaValley believes parents and community are the “secret sauce” of education. This belief, coupled with a desire to serve his community, inspired him to run for the Academy District 20 (ASD20) Board of Education (BOE).
Elected as BOE director in 2017, LaValley’s passion for both community and education continues to grow. He is a life-long learner and strives to inspire others to follow suite. He believes we should always ask the hard questions and, in turn, share information learned.
A native of Michigan, LaValley attended the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) where he earned his undergraduate degree in engineering mechanics. He later earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from New Mexico State University.
LaValley has enjoyed a successful career as both an USAFA mathematics instructor and a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Today he flies the 787 Dreamliner for United Airlines.
Although LaValley’s professional career takes him around the globe, his heart remains in Colorado Springs, Colo. In addition to serving on the BOE, he is also a member of the Tri-lakes YMCA Advisory Board and the El Paso County Republican Party Executive Committee. He previously served as a BOE member and chairman for one of ASD20’s charter schools, The Classical Academy.
LaValley and his wife Nona, married for more than 37 years, are the loving parents of four adult children: Andrew, Emily, Claire, and Spencer. Both Emily and Claire share in their father’s love of education and have served as teachers at The Classical Academy.
When he isn’t flying or volunteering, he spends time doing home improvement projects and enjoying nature. He has hiked all 54 Colorado 14’ers and his favorite summit is Little Bear.
