With roots as a tire shop in San Antonio in 1938, which later sold surplus military equipment, Academy Sport & Outdoors now operates over 130 sporting good stores throughout the South and Southwest. Academy stores offer a variety of apparel, footwear and equipment for various sports and outdoors activities. Academy Sport & Outdoors was acquired by the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co L.P. in August.
