John Walsh has a diverse work experience spanning various industries. John started their career as an Assistant Coach for Cross Country and Track and Field at Cuyamaca College in 2002. John then worked as a Substitute Teacher and Track Coach at Bergen County Technical Schools from 2002 to 2008. In 2007, they served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Stephen H. Womack at the Superior Court of New Jersey. From 2008 to 2009, they were an Assistant to the Athletic Director at Fordham University Athletic Department. John then became a Basketball Coach (Freshman) at All Hallows High School from 2009 to 2010. In 2013, they joined Ace Endico as the Director of Compliance and Risk Management, where they managed the risk of a food service distribution company and led health and safety programs. In 2014, they volunteered as a CYO Basketball Coach at the Church of St. Patrick. In 2016, John founded the Open Court Wildcats and also served as the Head Coach.

John Walsh earned a Bachelor's degree in History from Rutgers University–New Brunswick, where they studied from 1997 to 2001. John then attended the Thomas Jefferson School of Law from 2002 to 2005 and obtained a Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree, specializing in Law. Additionally, in September 2016, John obtained certification as a USA Basketball Youth Development Coach from USA Basketball. In March 2016, they also obtained certification from the New Jersey Bar Association.
