Joseph Cohen

Joseph Cohen is an accomplished legal professional with extensive experience in civil rights and union work. Currently serving as Deputy Director of State Campaigns and Senior Advisor for Affiliate Partnerships at the ACLU since December 2022, Cohen previously held the position of Executive Director at the ACLU of West Virginia from September 2016 to December 2022, overseeing efforts to protect civil liberties and achieve notable policy victories. Prior to that, Cohen was the General Counsel at the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America from 2004 to September 2016, where legal coordination was provided for various unions representing 35,000 workers. Earlier roles include serving as Staff Attorney at the same organization and as an Equal Justice Works Fellow and Staff Attorney at Florida Rural Legal Services, assisting low-income families facing housing crises. Cohen holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Washington & Jefferson College.
