Walter E. Buchanan III

Lt. Gen. Buchanan III was Commander of the 9th Air Force and U.S. Central Command Air Forces, where he was responsible for air operations in a 27-nation area of responsibility covering Central and Southwest Asia and the Horn of Africa. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Combined Forces Air Component Commander, U.S. Central Command and as the Commander of Joint Task Force Southwest Asia at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. His staff tours include assignments to Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Headquarters Air Force, the Joint Staff, and as Deputy Director of Allied Command Europe Reaction Force Air Staff for NATO. Buchanan received his commission from the U.S. Air Force Academy, earned a master’s degree in Management from Troy State University, and attended the Army Command and General Staff College and the National War College.
