Ian Seiferling

Chief Biologist at Adaviv

Ian Seiferling started their work experience in 2007 as an Independent Environmental Consultant and Field Biologist. In 2008, they became a Principle Investigator and Master's Candidate at the Messier Lab, Centre d'etude de la foret (CEF), Universite du Quebec a Montreal, where they obtained their Master's of Science in Biology degree. From 2010 to 2011, they worked as a Field Biologist at the Centre for Forest Research (CEF). Ian then joined FunDiv Europe as a Principal Investigator in 2012, where they conducted biodiversity research on forests. Ian also worked as a PhD Candidate at the Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres from 2012 to 2016, focusing on the Functional Significance of Forest Diversity Europe project. In 2015, Ian became a PhD Researcher at the MIT Senseable City Lab, where they developed research at the intersection of functional ecology, image analysis, and urban innovation. Ian worked there until 2016. Ian then joined the MIT Senseable City Lab again as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow from 2017 to 2018, leading research on urban green-space and vegetation mapping and distribution. In 2018, they co-founded AdaViv, a hardware-enabled, predictive agriculture and machine vision company, where they served as the CEO until 2019. Ian later returned to AdaViv in 2021 as the Chief Biologist. Additionally, Ian was an Entrepreneurial Fellow at MIT Delta V in 2018 and a Cohort member at MIT designX in the same year.

From 2000 to 2005, Ian Seiferling obtained a BSc Honours degree in Biology from the University of Regina.

From 2008 to 2010, they pursued a Masters degree in Ecology at UQAM | Université du Québec à Montréal.

From 2010 to 2015, Ian Seiferling completed their PhD in Biology at Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

In 2015, they undertook a Visiting PhD Researcher program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, specializing in Sustainability & Urban Ecosystems.
