Caroline Coles has a diverse work experience spanning several companies and sectors. Caroline started their career in 1982 at The Boots Company as a Retail Marketing Manager. From 1995 to 1998, they worked at Freeth Cartwright Solicitors as a Trainee and then an Assistant Solicitor. In 1998, they joined De Montfort University as a Principal Lecturer, where they focused on academic practice development, international collaboration, and teaching subjects such as intellectual property law. Caroline remained at the university until June 2018. In 2004, they briefly served as a National Quality Assessor at the Solicitors Regulation Authority. In 2017, they began working at Advance HE as a National Teacher Fellow and later became the Chair of the National Committee for UK National Teacher Fellows. Starting in 2018, they joined Aston University as a Senior Lecturer and took on additional roles, including Director of International for Aston Law School and Deputy Head of Aston Law School on an interim basis.

Caroline Coles completed their undergraduate studies in Politics and Government, earning a B.Sc (Econ) degree from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) between 1979 and 1982. In 1992-1994, they pursued further education at Nottingham Trent University, obtaining a PG law (GDL) and LPC qualification. Caroline later returned to LSE to pursue a Master of Science degree in Law, and the exact years of their enrollment are not mentioned. In 2008-2010, they completed their Master of Education (MEd) degree with a specialization in Digital Enhanced Learning at De Montfort University. In terms of certifications, Caroline obtained their Solicitor accreditation from The Law Society in 1998, and in 2017 they received the National Teacher Fellow designation from Advance HE.
