Tom Paynter has had a diverse work experience. In 2017, they were a Research and Development Engineer at Advanced Navigation, where their experiences included systems development for underwater acoustics and robotics, system integration, analogue/digital circuit design, debugging and improvement, complex PCB design, complex electronic debugging and rework, design and build of bespoke test gear and systems, and marine based fieldwork including skippering of small boats. From 2013-2016, they were the Electrical Engineering Lead and Student Mentor at Curtin Motorsport Team, where their responsibilities included managing up to 10 people and their respective projects, ensuring quality standards and deadlines were met, and mentoring students to promote good engineering process. In 2016, they were a Project Student at KTH Formula Student and a Robotics Engineer Intern at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 2014, they were an English Teacher at AIESEC, where they traveled to Xalapa, Mexico, to plan and deliver english classes for the local university community.
Tom Paynter completed a double Bachelor's Degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering and Physics at Curtin University between 2013 and 2017. Tom also completed a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology between 2016 and 2017. In 2019, they obtained a Divemaster (DM) certification from PADI.
