Kirsten Barnes

Kirsten Barnes serves as the South Africa Chapter Co-lead for the African Circular Economy Network (ACEN), facilitating networking and strategic discussions since August 2025. As an independent consultant specializing in the circular economy in Africa, Kirsten focuses on developing local solutions, integrating the informal sector, and creating sustainable business models. Prior experience includes roles as an Expert Circular Economy Analyst and Senior Analyst at GreenCape, where Kirsten promoted circular economy practices and addressed waste economy challenges. Previously, significant academic roles included postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Cape Town and University of KwaZulu-Natal, along with a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science in Environmental Science and Chemistry from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
