Doug Piekarz

President & C.e.o. at Akron Zoo

Doug Piekarz is the current President & CEO at Akron Zoo. Doug has over 30 years of experience in the wildlife conservation field.

Doug started their career in 1988 as a Sr. Wild Animal Keeper / Area Supervisor at Wildlife Conservation Society. Doug was responsible for all aspects of the bird department commissary, animal holding facilities, and roughly 15 acres of exhibits. Doug participated in the development of the “Big Bird” exhibit and the renovation of the large Sea Bird Aviary during their time there.

In 1997, Doug left Wildlife Conservation Society to take on the role of President & CEO at Akron Zoo, where they still work today. Under their leadership, the Akron Zoo has undergone a major expansion, adding several new exhibits and attractions. The zoo has also been recognized as one of the top zoos in the country by multiple organizations.

Doug Piekarz earned their Master of Science in Biology, Ecology, and Evolution from Montclair State University. Doug also holds a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Rutgers University. In addition, Doug Piekarz has completed an Executive Leadership Development Program through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and a Community Leadership program through Leadership Akron Class XXIV.
