Staff Engineer Cell Culture Process Development at Akston Biosciences

Esam Abdelgadir has been in the biotechnology industry since 1998. Esam started their career at Alkermes as a Lead Manufacturing Associate, where they were responsible for the setup and execution of Protein Powder Process and Microsphere Process. Esam also contributed to the setup of a new automated manufacturing facility in Cambridge, including equipment installation, troubleshooting, executing protocols, writing SOPs, and training of new employees. In 2003, they moved to EMD PHARMACEUTICALS, INC as an Upstream Process Development Associate, where their primary responsibility was to work closely with process development on multiple products to improve process and maximize productivity from 5 Liters to the 250 Liter scale. Esam also managed all aspects of the 250 L Cell Culture Bioreactor suite and scaled-up cells from a frozen vial to an 8 Liter spinner flask to a 250 Liter bioreactor. In 2007, they joined Acceleron Pharma as a Senior Process Development Associate. In 2011, they moved to Sanofi Genzyme as a Manufacturing Specialist III. In 2018, they joined Thermo Fisher Scientific as a Senior Scientist and in 2021, they joined Codiak BioSciences as a Staff Scientist. Currently, they are a Staff Engineer Cell Culture Process Development and a Staff Engineer at Akston Biosciences Corporation.

Esam Abdelgadir received a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology from Salem State University. Esam then furthered their education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they completed a Professional Education in Fermentation Technology.
