Jim Amundsen

Engineering Project Manager at Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium

Jim Amundsen has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Jim began their career as a Captain in the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, serving in various leadership positions. Jim then transitioned to the private sector, working as an R&D Engineer for Crane Composites. During this time, they developed new applications and manufacturing processes for fiberglass-reinforced plywood panels.

In 1994, Jim became the City Engineer for the City of Washington Court House, OH, before joining Klickitat County as an Assistant County Engineer in 1996. In this role, they oversaw the design and construction management of the county's capital and emergency repair projects and led the repair and recovery efforts after flood and storm events.

Jim's next move took him to the State of Alaska DOT&PF, where they initially worked as a Project Engineer before gaining increasing responsibilities as an E-II and E-III Project Manager in the Aviation Design and Highway Design Sections. Jim was responsible for managing a range of airport and highway design projects, ranging in size from $2M-$3M to over $100M.

In 2001, Jim was promoted to Chief of the Highway Design Section, where they led a team of 45 members and was accountable for delivering the ~$200M to $400M/yr Highway Design Annual Program for the Central Region in Alaska until December 2021.

Throughout their career, Jim has also shared their expertise as an Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage, teaching courses related to their field of expertise.

Most recently, Jim joined the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) in 2022 as an Engineering Project Manager.

Jim Amundsen attended the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1980 to 1984, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in General Science & Civil Engineering. In 2001, they enrolled at the University of Alaska Anchorage and earned a certification in Arctic Engineering. Additionally, they hold a Professional Engineer - Civil certification, currently registered in Alaska, from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering & Surveying.
