Sylvia C. Wilson

Chairperson at Alcosan

Sylvia C. Wilson, who has been a member of the ALCOSAN Board of Directors since February 20, 2000, was elected as chair on January 24, 2017.

Wilson’s service to ALCOSAN is only one piece of her lifetime of community service. An elementary education teacher for 26 years, she was a long-time assistant to the head of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers and was a member of the union’s executive board from 1979 until 2010. She also was active on the union’s behalf on the state and national level.

Wilson has been an elected member of the Pittsburgh Board of Education, where she represents District 1.

She is treasurer of the Allegheny County Labor Council Executive Board, a member of the board of directors of the Riverset Credit Union and a member of the Democratic National Committee and the Pennsylvania State Democratic Committee.

Wilson is a life member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, an ex officio trustee of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and, for more than 20 years, she was an active volunteer with community youth baseball and football organizations.

She has been honored by numerous organizations for her work. Most recently, Wilson accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Public Service from the Nabhi Christian Ministries.

She was educated in public schools in the North Hills and Pittsburgh Public school districts. She graduated from Pittsburgh’s Peabody High School, earned her bachelor of arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University and her masters of education degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
