Megan Smithey

Director Clinical Development at Alector

Megan Smithey's work experience includes several roles and positions in the field of clinical immunology and biomarkers. Megan started their career as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2005, and then moved on to become a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Arizona from 2008 to 2011. At the University of Arizona, they also worked as a Research Assistant Professor, focusing on age-related immune dysfunction and translational research in human subjects.

In 2018, Megan joined Vir Biotechnology, Inc. as a Senior Scientist, and later became an Associate Director of Clinical Immunology. In these roles, they led Clinical Immunology across multiple therapeutic modalities and infectious disease targets and contributed to leadership team decisions. Megan represented clinical immunology on various clinical sub teams, study management teams, and program teams. Megan also served as a subject matter expert, both internally and externally, to support Vir's mission and goals. Their work at Vir included pre-clinical support through Phase 1-3 clinical trials.

Most recently, Megan is the Director of Clinical Development at Alector, a position they started in February 2023.

Megan Smithey pursued their education with a strong focus on the sciences. Megan started their educational journey in 1995 at Reed College, although the specific degree and field of study are unknown. In 1996, they transitioned to Portland State University, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Molecular Microbiology. Megan completed this program in 3 years, graduating in 1999. Continuing their academic journey, Megan joined Oregon Health & Science University in 1999 and pursued a PhD in Immunology, which they completed in 2005.
