Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research
Dr. Melanie Bergmann is a Senior Scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar and Marine Research (AWI) since May 2004, focusing on the analysis of time-series photographs from the deep Arctic seafloor to evaluate ecological impacts of global change and studying trophic interactions among bottom-dwelling organisms. Prior to this role, Dr. Bergmann served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Wales, Bangor from February 2001 to March 2004, where a study on essential fish habitats for various species was conducted, managing research cruises and supervising students. Dr. Bergmann completed a PhD in Marine Biology at the University of London, following a Master's degree in Biology of Water Resource Management at Edinburgh Napier University, as well as a Vordiplom in Biology at Freie Universität Berlin. A foundation in Political Science was achieved at Freie Universität Berlin and an Abitur from Sophie-Charlotte-Oberschule.

Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research
As the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, the Alfred Wegener Institute is primarily active in the cold and temperate regions of the world. Working together with numerous national and international partners, we are actively involved in unravelling the complex processes at work in the “Earth System”. Our planet is undergoing fundamental climate change; the polar regions and the oceans, which play central roles in the global climate system, are in flux. How will planet Earth evolve? Do the phenomena we’re observing represent short-term fluctuations or long-term trends? Polar and marine research has always been a fascinating scientific challenge; today it is also research into the future.
