Gerald M. “Jerry” Johnston began his career as an Engineering Draftsman, where he developed a strong understanding of the fundamental knowledge and requirements of A/E/C Industry projects. Having learned these skills prior to the advent of CADD, he learned to draft by hand and made computations on calculators—an early introduction that lead to a strong passion for the development, construction and related industrial specialties.

After transitioning to field work, Jerry became proficient in surveying instrument technology—which was still mechanical and measurements were made via tape measurement. Such early experiences helped Jerry develop an understanding for the fundamentals of detail and precision, which are of paramount importance in the A/E/C Industry.

As his career developed, Jerry adapted the fundamentals of surveying to each technological evolution, allowing him to strengthen his contribution in this process. Upon joining Allen & Company at its inception, Jerry’s leadership skills were forged through the experience of opening and managing satellite offices in Clermont and Tampa Florida. Jerry also managed the company’s Caribbean operations, which included projects in Barbados and six projects on five Islands in the Bahamas.

After holding the position of Vice President for the last 20 years, Jerry sought to share his passion for the business in a role that engaged the industry directly and he now serves as the Executive Director of Business Development. In this role, Jerry contributes with his extensive surveying experience, the understanding of the implementation of emerging technologies, and his determination for sharing the company’s story and the solutions it provides. He leads a team of equally-passionate surveying, mapping and geospatial services’ professionals who offer cutting edge technologies and solutions in a constantly-evolving digital world—exactly where Allen & Company needs to be as it engages the opportunity of the future head on.

Jerry’s core belief is that there is a solution for every problem—and this is his driving force in the role he holds at Allen & Company. Through his understanding, active listening, and willingness to take on a challenge, Jerry applies a collaborative approach to the development of project-specific solutions. Whether the solutions may be people, process or technology based, he engages opportunity with ownership and accountability that can ensure the project’s success.
