Alfred Hannig

Chief Executive Officer at Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI)

Alfred Hannig serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) since January 2008, where Dr. Hannig has been instrumental in expanding the organization into a global knowledge hub for policymakers and regulatory institutions from over 90 developing and emerging nations. Prior to this role, Dr. Hannig held various leadership positions at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, including Program Director for initiatives in Indonesia focused on economic empowerment, employment, and microfinance. Dr. Hannig also directed the Financial System Development Program at the Bank of Uganda and led the Financial System Development and Banking Services Unit at GIZ. Early career experience includes research and policy advisory roles at the German Development Institute and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Dr. Hannig earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Financial Sector Reform from Freie Universität Berlin.
