Yu Gao has extensive experience in research and engineering roles related to video coding, computer vision, and software development. Currently, Yu is working as a Research Scientist at Meta, starting in November 2021. Prior to that, Yu worked at Altumview Systems Inc from February 2017, where they served as a Senior Research Scientist and Manager. In this role, Yu led the development of a drone vision module for object tracking and obstacle avoidance, as well as a smart camera for anomaly detection. They also developed video streaming and VoIP modules and a manufacture test suite for the smart camera.
Before joining Altumview Systems Inc, Yu worked as a Senior Software Engineer at AMD from August 2016 to February 2017. At AMD, they contributed to software development projects. Prior to this, Yu worked at Evertz from May 2015 to August 2016 as an Algorithm Design Engineer. In this role, Yu designed and developed algorithms for video encoding platforms, optimized them through parallelization techniques, and evaluated hardware accelerators.
Yu's earlier work experience includes a research assistant role at Simon Fraser University from September 2009 to December 2014. In this position, Yu proposed novel approaches for multiview video coding and psychovisual modeling. They also worked as a Teaching Assistant at Simon Fraser University from September 2012 to December 2012.
Yu also gained research experience as a Research Intern at the National Institute of Informatics from September 2013 to January 2014. Additionally, Yu worked as a Research Assistant at Beijing University of Technology from September 2005 to July 2008, conducting research on video scene change detection and developing a media server for mobile video streaming.
Yu Gao completed a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Beijing University of Technology from 2001 to 2005. They then pursued a Master's Degree in the same field at the same university from 2005 to 2008. Subsequently, Yu Gao attended Simon Fraser University from 2009 to 2014, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
