Patrick Smith has extensive work experience in the mining industry. Patrick began their career in 1987 as a Graduate Mining Engineer at Kembla Coal & Coke. Patrick then worked as a Mining Engineer at Cable Sands (WA) from 1990 to 1994. From 1994 to 1995, they served as a Senior Mining Engineer at Westgold Resources. Subsequently, they worked as an Underground Manager and Senior Mining Engineer at Plutonic Resources from 1996 to 1998. Patrick then joined Mining Solutions Pty Ltd as a Contract Mining Engineer from 1998 to 2001. At WMC Resources, they held the position of Technical Planning Manager and Senior Mining Engineer from 2001 to 2004. From 2004 onwards, Patrick worked at AMC Consultants, where they held various roles such as Principal Consultant, Group Manager - Mining, General Manager - Brisbane, and eventually became the Managing Director and CEO in 2014. In 2015, they also served as a Director at Austmine.

Patrick Smith completed their Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree in Mining from The University of Queensland from 1983 to 1986. Prior to that, they started their engineering studies at Lehigh University from 1981 to 1982. Patrick Smith also holds several additional certifications, including FAusIMM Chartered Professional (Mining) from AusIMM, First Class Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency from the Department of Mines and Petroleum (WA), and Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (Mining) from the Board of Professional Engineers Queensland.
