John Marks has a diverse work experience in various roles and organizations. Starting in 2008, they worked as a Gallery Assistant at the Daura Gallery, where they assisted with exhibit construction, collections organization, and engaging with the public. From 2010 to 2012, they served as an Editorial Assistant for the Journal of Southern History, copyediting, fact-checking, and assisting with the compilation of the journal's annual bibliography.
In 2012, John was an Archival Assistant at the Woodson Research Center Special Collections & University Archives, where they gained experience in managing archival materials. In 2013, they became Assistant Director of the Program for the Study of Ethnicity, Race, and Culture at Rice University, contributing to the development of the program's vision and mission. John also managed events, external communications, and the organization's web presence.
Moving to a teaching role, John worked as an Adjunct Instructor at Raritan Valley Community College from 2015 to 2016 and as an Adjunct Professor at Rowan University from 2016 to 2017, providing instruction in relevant subjects.
In 2017, John joined Saving Hallowed Ground as a Program Coordinator, overseeing historic preservation and commemoration programs and managing the organization's web presence and marketing. John also played a key role in rebranding the organization and writing new mission and vision statements.
Later in 2017, John joined the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), initially as an External Relations Coordinator, where they contributed to the organization's outreach efforts. John then became the Senior Manager of Strategic Initiatives, overseeing new initiatives, partnerships, grant projects, and field-wide research. In 2021, they became the Director of the AASLH Public History Research Lab, leading research efforts on the U.S. public history community and the role of history in American life.
In addition to their professional experience, John organized an international scholarly symposium at Rice University in 2014, where they handled all aspects of event execution and promoted it through social media engagement.
