Mary McDermott has a diverse and extensive work experience in the legal field. Mary began their career in 1991 as an Assistant Counsel at the Illinois State Bar Association. Mary then worked at the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts as a Lawyer and Committee Liaison, where they managed various committees and provided assistance on statewide issues.
In 1998, Mary joined the Illinois Attorney General's Office as an Appellate Division Lawyer and later moved to the City of Chicago Board of Ethics as an Attorney-Investigator and Ethics Advisor. In this role, they provided ethics advice, investigated violations, and monitored campaign finance filings.
Mary then worked as General Counsel and Staff Liaison at the Illinois State Bar Association, where they responded to members' requests for assistance on ethics issues and coordinated committee projects. Mary also served as First Assistant Counsel and Staff Liaison, managing member communication and developing curriculum for continuing legal education programs.
Mary's career also includes roles at the John Marshall Law School as an Adjunct Professor and at Chicago area schools and colleges as a Writing Teacher. Mary earned a Masters of Arts in Teaching and utilized the Lucy Calkins method of writing instruction.
Currently, Mary is with the American Bar Association, where they have held various positions. As Lead Senior Counsel and Committee Staff Liaison at the Center for Professional Responsibility, they provide research and writing support on lawyer professional responsibility and develops ethics opinions. Mary also served as Senior Counsel and Committee Staff Liaison, editing and managing the production of the Center's magazine. Previously, they worked as Associate Counsel and Project Manager, contributing to the development and passage of an amendment to the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct.
Throughout their career, Mary McDermott has consistently demonstrated expertise in legal ethics, committee management, teaching, and writing.
Mary McDermott holds a JD from DePaul University College of Law. Mary also has a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus on Education from National Louis University. Additionally, Mary earned a BA in Political Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Mary is licensed in Illinois according to the Supreme Court of Illinois.
