James Shulman

Vice President And Chief Operating Officer at American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)

James Shulman serves as the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) since July 2018, collaborating with President Joy Connolly on strategic planning and representing ACLS to various stakeholders. Prior to this role, Shulman held positions as a Senior Fellow in Residence at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, where efforts focused on researching liberal arts education outcomes and authoring a book on intermediary organizations, and as an Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. Shulman was the Founding President of Artstor from 2001 to 2016, leading the organization in creating a comprehensive library of art images for educational use. Earlier experience includes serving as a Financial and Administrative Officer and Researcher at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and teaching at Yale University in the English, Art History, and Renaissance Studies departments. Shulman earned a PhD and BA in Renaissance Studies from Yale University.
