Raymond Joabar

Group President, Global Merchant & Network Services at American Express

Raymond Joabar is Group President of American Express’ Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) organization. In this position, he leads the team that oversees relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express, as well as the team that runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally.

Leveraging his broad experience, Raymond brings a unique perspective to GMNS as the company continues to grow its global merchant acceptance footprint and modernizes the American Express payment network to meet a broader range of customer needs.

He is a board-elected officer of the company, and a member of the Executive Committee, which develops the company’s strategic direction and determines its key policies.

Prior to his current role, he served as Chief Risk Officer and President of Global Risk and Compliance of American Express and American Express National Bank (AENB) since September 2019. As Chief Risk Officer, Raymond was responsible for developing American Express’ and the U.S. Bank’s risk appetite, ensuring safety and soundness, and strengthening the control and compliance environment.

Raymond joined American Express in 1992 and has served in a wide variety of senior roles across the company. These roles include the President of the International Consumer Services and Global Travel & Lifestyle Services, where he helped lead the development of American Express’ country-by-country strategy that led to accelerated growth in the company’s top strategic international markets. He also led global customer service and credit and fraud operations.

He has a passion for large-scale business transformation and is committed to building talent and diversity in the workplace.

Raymond holds a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Manchester Business School. He enjoys running, golf and photography and is an advocate for the arts. He currently serves on the boards of the Lincoln Center Theater and the American Associates of the National Theatre.
