Joel Markis is currently serving as President of the Alaska Chapter for the American Fisheries Society. Previously, Joel has held positions as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska Southeast, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage, a Research Fisheries Biologist at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and a Shipwright at Sloth Boats. Joel also has experience as a Fisheries Technician for the National Park Service and as a Forestry Technician for the US Forest Service. Joel earned a Master of Science in Marine Biology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The American Fisheries Society (AFS), founded in 1870, is the oldest and largest professional society representing fisheries scientists. The AFS promotes scientific research and enlightened management of aquatic resources for optimum use and enjoyment by the public. It also encourages comprehensive education of fisheries scientists and continuing on-the-job training.
