Richard Thacker

Trustee at American Osteopathic Association

Richard R. Thacker, DO, FACOI, is an AOA board-certified osteopathic internal medicine and hospice and palliative care physician. Dr. Thacker received his degree in osteopathic medicine from the Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he had the privilege to serve as freshman class president and president of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA). He completed his osteopathic residency at Delaware Valley Medical Center in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, where he served as chief intern and chief medical resident as well as received recognition as Resident of the Year.

Upon completion of post-doctoral training, Dr. Thacker began his career as a National Health Service Corp Scholar in Madison, Florida, at a community health center. He then went on to practice internal medicine at Capital Regional Medical Group in Tallahassee, Florida, for 23 years. Dr. Thacker currently is the Assistant Dean of Clinical Sciences and Resources at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine in Dothan, Alabama, and continues to serve as the Tallahassee Core Site Clinical Director for ACOM.

Dr. Thacker formerly served as a medical director for several skilled nursing facilities in the Tallahassee area. He was an associate medical director for Big Bend Hospice for 15 years. He is a past chairman of the board of trustees for Capital Regional Medical Center after first serving as chairman of the Department of Medicine and chief of staff. Dr. Thacker was honored to receive the HCA Frist Humanitarian award for 2015 in recognition of his service to the Tallahassee community and participation in international medical mission trips.

At the state level, Dr. Thacker has served in multiple capacities within the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA) since 1988, including President 2006-2007. In 2008, he was honored as FOMA’s “Physician of the Year.” Dr. Thacker remains active within FOMA where he serves on multiple committees, including as a Key Contact Physician for the Florida legislature. He is a former member of the Florida Medicaid Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee. Currently, Dr. Thacker services as a founding member of the State of Florida Medical Care Advisory Committee and the Potentially Preventable Events Work Group, both through the Florida Department of Health.

On a national level, Dr. Thacker is a member of the AOA Board of Trustees, where he has served on a variety of committees including Chair of Committee on Basic Documents and Operations of Affiliated Organizations, Bureau of State Government Affairs and Bureau of International Osteopathic Medicine. Currently he serves as Vice Chair of the Department of Educational Affairs and BOT Liaison for the Advocates to the AOA. In addition, he participates as Treasurer for the Osteopathic Political Action Committee.

Dr. Thacker resides in Tallahassee with his wife, Sherry, and children, Blake and Allison.
