Jim O'Brien began their work experience in 1974 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, where they served until 2000. In 2000, they transitioned to working at the American Society of Civil Engineers, first as Managing Director of Professional and Educational Activities, and later as Managing Director of Leader Development.
Jim O'Brien completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1970 to 1974. Jim then pursued a Master of Science degree in Engineering Mechanics at Stanford University from 1980 to 1982.
