David Barrett is the current CEO of the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy. Prior to this, they served as senior counsel to the Career Education Corporation’s Compliance Department, providing guidance on statutory, regulatory, and accreditation matters related to higher education. David also directed all compliance-related internal investigations and supported litigation and HR investigations.

Before their time at the Career Education Corporation, David Barrett was an adjunct professor at DePaul University, where they instructed “Working with Nonprofit Boards,” a graduate-level course exploring the legal and philosophical reasons that nonprofits are governed by an external board of directors.

David Barrett began their career as an intern at the U.S. Department of Justice, where they interned with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois. During their internship, they represented the U.S. by independently prosecuting petty offenses, aided in the prosecution of a Medicare fraud criminal complaint, and supported the defense and settlement of a medical malpractice claim.

David Barrett has a J.D. from DePaul University College of Law, an M.S. in Public Services Management from DePaul University, and a B.A. in Political Science and Theirtory from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
