Dan Hunt

Dr. Dan Hunt currently serves as the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) as a field secretary and recently served as the Senior Associate Dean for Curriculum Innovation at the New York University School of Medicine which is the newest medical school to achieve accreditation. Prior to that he served nine years as Co-Secretary for the LCME which oversees the accreditation of the all U.S. and Canadian medical degree granting medical schools.

Prior to joining the LCME in September 2007, he was the Founding Vice Dean for Academic Activities from 2004-2007 at Canada’s first new medical school in more than 30 years, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Before that, Dr. Hunt was a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington and served for 17 years as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, responsible for medical student education in the WWAMI program which is the five state consortium for physician training in the states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. While there, he was the founding principal investigator for the Native American Center of Excellence and the Robert Wood Johnson Minority Medical Education Program.

Dr. Hunt is a past president of the Global Health Education Consortium which later merged with the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. Dr. Hunt has over 50 peer reviewed publications in topics of medical education, accreditation, psychiatry, and is co-editor of the book describing the creation of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. He is also a co-editor with Ronald Harden and John Dent of the fifth edition of A Practical Guide for Medical Teachers.

After earning his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1973, he completed his postgraduate training in Psychiatry at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. While serving as chief resident, he was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar and was awarded a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business. In 1990, he served as a WHO fellow at the Universiti Kebangsaan, Malaysia.

Dr. Hunt has conducted numerous international workshops in a variety of countries on topics of medical education, program evaluation, and accreditation. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society, was honored with the “Golden Apple” award for teaching during his time at the University of Washington and more recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Regional Medical Campuses.
