Emilie Surrusco has extensive experience in communications and speechwriting. Emilie currently serves as the Director of Presidential Communications at American University since 2022. Prior to that, they worked as a Senior Speechwriter at the U.S. Small Business Administration from 2021 to 2022. From 2017 to 2021, they founded and operated the Ellsworth Media Group, providing writing and editing services to progressive organizations and individuals. Emilie also worked as a Senior Speechwriter at the US Small Business Administration from 2016 to 2017, where they were responsible for drafting speeches and other written materials for the SBA Administrator. Before that, they held positions as Assistant Director at the American Federation of Teachers from 2014 to 2016, Speechwriter at the American Bar Association from 2012 to 2014, and Communications Director at the Alaska Wilderness League from 2008 to 2012. Emilie also served as a Media Consultant for Iraq Veterans Against the War from 2007 to 2008 and as the Web/Publications Coordinator for the Education Writers Association from 2006 to 2006. Emilie began their career as an Associate at Abernathy Associates from 2003 to 2005, managing key accounts and executing communications strategies.

Emilie Surrusco holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College, which they earned from 2005 to 2007. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Political Studies and Asian Studies from Pitzer College, graduating between 1992 and 1996. Emilie also briefly attended Nanjing University in 1995. Emilie completed their secondary education at Sidwell Friends School. Additionally, Emilie has participated in a program at Media Bistro.
